Introducing the “Oko Mama” Jewellery Box, a unique and culturally rich piece from NTT (Nusa Tenggara Timur), Indonesia. This exquisite jewellery box is inspired by the traditional “Oko Mama” used in South Central Timor regency to convey good intentions and strengthen bonds.
Traditionally, Oko Mamas are used as means of conveying good intentions from one party to another in South Central Timor regency. For example, if someone wants to convey their intention or desire, he must “give” Oko Mama to the person he is addressing. If the person given takes the contents of Oko Mama (usually betel nuts), it means they agree to what the giver said.
Oko Mama itself is a symbol of kinship and togetherness because the Oko Mama indicates the strong bond between the giver and the one who is given. “Oko” means “place for betel nuts”, and “Mama” means “eating”, so “Oko Mama” has a meaning of “eating betel nuts together” with those who give and receive Oko Mama.
Each Oko Mama is handmade by local artisans and every purchase supports their families and cultures. Please kindly note that there might be a slight difference in sizes as each and every Oko Mamas are handmade.
Embrace the essence of Indonesian heritage with the “Oko Mama” Jewellery Box and celebrate the art of giving and receiving.
